Workplace Environment Compliance Requirements and Practices of Garments Owners in Bangladesh: An Analysis

Workplace environment of garment factories in Bangladesh is the most noteworthy topic around the global apparel market due to some industrial disasters including factory fires, collapse of garment factory building which killed thousands of garments workers life. Nowadays garments owners claimed that they are trying to meet the workplace environment related laws requirements and conditions provided by national and international governing bodies and buyers. But the question arise to what extent garments owners meet those requirements .So, this paper try to show the actual workplace compliance situation by conducting a gap analysis between workplace environment compliance requirement and practices of garments owners. The study found that garments owners do not meet the requirements. All are trying to avoid compliance at the stake of losing competitive advantage by increasing cost. Actually garments owners create their own culture of noncompliance with any laws. Compliance with the workplace environment requirements of garments owners is the matter of social responsibility because it is their responsibility to provide decent and safety workplace for workers.
